MEDIA RELEASE

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the TEY 2022/2023 edition, Datuk Ravindran K, President of UMW Toyota Motor said “This year marks 21 years since the Toyota Eco Youth program first began and we are absolutely thrilled to once again be here engaging Malaysian youth to be stewards of our planet. As a brand committed to zero CO2 emissions by 2050, we aim to inspire and help pave the way for bright young minds to be changemakers towards a more sustainable future.”

He continued, “I would like to thank all 16 teams for the hard work and determination shown throughout this time and to congratulate the winners of the Toyota Eco Youth 2022/2023 edition who have shown us today what young Malaysian minds are capable of given the right opportunities.”

“Move Your World is our realisation of a future mobility society as we transition from being an automobile company to a mobility company by enriching the lives of the communities we operate in. To that end, the Toyota Eco You programme aims to create a positive ripple effect in society by moving our youth to take climate action through innovative solutions that benefit the people and planet.”

Noting the importance of cultivating young minds to take climate action, Yang Berusaha Dr Norisah Binti Suhaili also emphasised the need for everyone to start taking concrete steps towards achieving carbon neutrality.

“I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to UMW Toyota Motor for 21 years of commitment in guiding and shaping the youth of Malaysia to be environmentally conscious and to serve as stewards of our planet. UMW Toyota Motor has been leading the way and moving from merely creating awareness to taking climate action in pursuit of environmental preservation in line with Malaysia’s aim to be carbon neutral by 2050. This is something all Malaysians need to emulate moving forward,” said Yang Berusaha Dr Norisah Binti Suhaili, Deputy Director of Sports, Co-curricular and Arts Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia.

TEY is a catalyst towards empowering the future generation with project management and critical thinking skills by introducing the Toyota 8-Step Problem Solving Methodology, an approach taken by UMW Toyota Motor employees to identify and investigate issues of concern in a methodological way. Alongside this approach, student teams are also introduced to Toyota Motor Corporation’s Guiding Principles which aims to foster a conscious society that lives in harmony with our environment.

Looking ahead, the TEY 22 edition will further place emphasis on the need for students to develop solutions, especially in electrification, that have a long-lasting positive impact on society. To further empower students, UMW Toyota Motor is committed to helping students develop their innovations via Intensive Prototype Development by established ‘TEY Makerspace Facilities’ and will consider collaborating with potential stakeholders to commercialise sustainable innovations.
